Member Interview

Who are you? Mary of Little Brown Bird.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm Mary Ryan. I run my little business out of my home in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The main focus of my shop is jewelry, but I also make hair accessories, scarves, clutch bags...really anything that captures my attention that day. I also have a few vintage items in my shop and hope to open a separate vintage shop when time allows. I currently have two other shops on Etsy
Urban Metal - Fine Silver Jewelry
In the Raw - Supplies

My shop name, Little Brown Bird, comes from a story I heard once, can't remember where. But it talks about a Buddhist teacher who is teaching his young pupil about the wonders of the forest. The young boy looks up and sees an eagle flying high above the trees. For the rest of the day, he can't stop talking about the eagle. His teacher finally points out to the boy that while he was so focused on the eagle, he has missed all the little brown birds flying around him. The story reminds us to take note of all the beautiful things in this world, no matter how big or small. It's a story that has stuck with me for years.

How did you learn about Etsy Project Embrace?

I learned of Etsy Project Embrace through a team member, Erika Price, who is also on another team with me. The idea of helping to raise awareness and money for cancer research seemed like a wonderful way to give back. I've lost many family members to cancer and my own father is a cancer survivor.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

Oh boy, that's a hard one. They are all my favorite when I first list them. I guess the item that has always been my favorite is my Love Quotes earrings.

I first designed these about 5 or six years ago. They are made of fine silver and I just love that they can have different meanings, depending on the order that you read them. I recently had a request from a buyer to make them into a necklace, so I added a necklace design to my shop as well.

What favorite vintage or antique item do you own, and why do you cherish it?

I have some old metal cases filled with family slides from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I found a slide of my parents when they were dating. I love how Mom is sneaking a little hand-holding in the picture, scandalous!

What is your favorite handmade possession?

I have about 93 pages of items saved in my favorites on Etsy, no joke! Had I the money, I would buy them all! But of things that I have right now, my favorite handmade item is a picture of me drawn by my nephew from when I got to visit his first grade class as his Most Valuable Person! Priceless.

What do you collect?

BEADS! I'm such a bead whore. I love shiny things.

Where would you like to be and what do you hope to be doing ten years from now?

I would love to own my own brick and mortar shop filled with all my jewelry and accessories, as well as those from about a 1000 of my favorite Etsians.

With just two and half weeks till my baby girl's due date, I'm officially nesting. Funnily enough, a very small, yet incredibly loud bird has chosen this week to begin building a nest under the safety of our front porch. Favourite Things

Hello, everyone! I'm trying a new format today in the hopes that we can socialize as a group a bit more. I'll post 5 questions with a common theme (all revolving around favorites, of course) and you guys can answer them in the comments section. Sound like a plan? I'll get us started.

The theme? General Internet Faves

1. What's your favorite blog? (And nah, this one doesn't count *wink*)
2. If you've made one, would you mind sharing your favorite online purchase from the past 3 months?
3. What's your favorite site for window shopping?
4. What's your favorite site for real shopping?
5. What's your favorite site for time-wasting?

I can't wait to hear your answers! If you have a theme suggestion for next week, add it to your comment! (Oh, and if you're reading this later in the week, don't let it stop you from commenting--I for one, always come back and check the posts a few times throughout the week.)
Have a fun day, everyone! --Katie :D

Social Media Engagement

The comments in my last post seemed to focus around the time it takes to use social media and also whether it's really important. It is hard to determine currently what the real return on investment is. Is it better to spend your time using a social network, or devote the time to creating? I think the answer to this is to go back to what YOUR goals are. If you create as an outlet, but are not really looking to take over the world, then perhaps you don't need to use Social Media. If you are trying to grow your business then people need to know you exist. Especially if you can't find ways locally to promote your creations.

You don't have to spend hours and hours using Social Media, but you do have to be careful not to get sucked into it and not be able to tear yourself away. Make a plan. Maybe you start with twitter and just spend 20 minutes a day, three days a week making connections. This doesn't mean posting links to your shop, it means just talk about what you are doing. What you are creating. At first, since you won't have many followers it will seem you are talking just to hear yourself type. This can be cathartic. Really. Eventually people will begin following you and will respond. It's a delightful feeling when that happens. Once you begin engaging this way and establishing who you are, then you can tweet a link here or there about one of your creations. Or, you can retweet someone else's link. Try starting here if you are working to grow your business. No more no less.

Etsy has a Storque article that is very appropriate to this topic written by Sister Diane from Portland, Or. There is even a podcast if you prefer listening to these kinds of topics rather then reading.

After you sign up for Twitter come back and post your twitter name so that we can all follow you. Perhaps we can even schedule a time and day that we all tweet...so that you have support and don't feel all alone. Plus, those of us who tweet can help you get followers.

Who are you?

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, I'm Poppy an Etsy "veteran." My first shop poppyswickedgarden.etsy.com started in 2006 selling mostly one of a kind clothing that didn't fit into my band reconstruction shop on feebay, of course it has transformed over the years, I opened my "DIY" reconstruction and TuTu shop in 2008 XPoppysWickedGardenX.etsy.com when Ebay started going downhill. Most recently in the past year my mother Cinders and I opened 2 more shops poppysgardengate.etsy.com for home & garden items and poppySprouts.etsy.com specializing in cute clothing for the kiddos.

How did you learn about Etsy Project Embrace?

I learned about Etsy Project Embrace through my love of treasuries.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

My personal fav items are the longstockings and convertibles. I wear them often myself because they are comfortable, cute and fun:)

What is your favorite possession, and why do you cherish it?

My favorite possession is my teeny weenie teddy bear that my father who died of Pancreatic Cancer 6 years ago gave to me when I was 3. I keep it on my shelf above my computer to remind me of him.

What do you collect?

I collect large quantities of fabric, seriously I have my own fabric store. I also collect CocaCola stuff for my kitchen and Yoda figures.

Where would you like to be and what do you hope to be doing ten years from now?

10 years from now I would love to still be doing what I am except I hope to be able to take the time to teach others my craft, specifically the underprivileged, helping them to become more self sufficient.

Favourite Things

Yay--another Tuesday! Today's whimsical favorite thing comes to us from Sharon of KnotOriginal. It's sure to make your inner child squirm with excitement!

One of my favorite things would have to be a treehouse. I would love a place of my very own to escape just for an hour a day...no ringing phones, no emails to answer, no beckoning laundry baskets and especially no "Honey, I can't find my..."

How cool is this? An entire treehouse neighborhood designed by Andrew Maynard Architects. It's still in the conceptual stages but when it becomes reality, sign me up!

For now, I'll continue to sit on my deck perched high up in the trees. If I crane my neck just so, I get a view of the Puget Sound...not too shabby for reality.

Great boots--I mean, view-- Sharon! Thanks for sharing this favorite thing with us. The urge to rent Swiss Family Robinson is becoming a little too strong to resist...

Treasury East What Makes it Tick?

No Waiting for the Magic Box to Open Anymore...

Staying up until the wee hours of the morning just to catch one...

You can make as many lists as you want, anytime you want...

What do you think...love it or hate it?

Everyone is trying to figure out the algorithm to understand what gets and keeps your treasury on the first page (the front page is another topic...) of the thousands of treasury east lists. From observation it appears that once you make a treasury you need to get as many people to visit your treasury as possible. They also need to click on each item and comment. The faster you get people to visit in a short time span the more likely it is that your treasury will be on the first page and stay there for, maybe a few hours! Since there are sooo many treasuries now we can't expect that buyers are going to page through all of them. Buyers will certainly look at the first page and probably a few more pages deep.

It really appears that Etsy is pushing hard to get everyone to use more Social Media tools...Twitter, Facebook, blogs...etc. Since these tools are used to communicate quickly and get rapid response to new treasuries and shop changes. If you have been hesitating to adopt, at least one of these, marketing tools I would suggest that you do a little research and find one that you can live with. I believe that you will begin to see less and less traffic in your shop if you don't begin using some of these tools.

There seems to also be some bugs when visiting and clicking the new treasuries. Depending on your browser your clicks may or may not register. The biggest offender is IE. It seems that Firefox works the best and Sarfari is marginally successful. I'm sure Etsy will get all of this under control pretty soon. Etsy has also stated that clicks sometimes take time to show up, but they will eventually.

You may be frustrated when clicking on items and you have to page back to keep looking at each new item. Try this trick. Open the treasury in a separate window. Then once that window is open, if using firefox you can hold your control key down and click on the item, it should open as a new tab within that window. Keep clicking each item like this and a tab will open for each item. Once you have looked at each you can then just close the entire window, rather then closing each item individually. This same thing works in Safari and I've been told it works in IE, but the commands are a little different.

If you want to find out what treasuries you are in and have google analytic's set up Craftopolis now has a tool to let you search. If you want to find a friends treasuries use this format with their shop name at the end:

http://www.etsy.com/treasury/people/shopname

If you have found any shortcuts or tips on how to maximize Etsy's Treasury East, post them in comments. I'll bullet point the additional tips/tricks so that we have one place to find them.

Member Interview

Who are you?  Katie of BlackStar.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Katie and I'm a landlocked, transplanted Yankee that lives in middle Tennessee. I've been self employed most of my adult life, from landscaping to working with my husband on his construction crew. We specialize in historic restoration.

I have 3 shops on Etsy ~ BlackStar (jewelry), BlackStarBeads (deStash) and BlackStarVintage (empty but someday will be my vintage shop). My shop is named after the BlackStar Line, a steamship company started by Marcus Garvey, who was born in Jamaica and immigrated to Harlem in 1916. My husband also has a construction company. Yep, BlackStar Construction. We spent a lot of time in Jamaica; a place I hold dear to my heart.

How did you learn about Etsy Project Embrace?

A friend of mine told me about Etsy Project Embrace. I was looking for a street team or two to join. I checked out the blog and the thread on the Etsy forums and liked what I read. My mom lost her battle with cancer, 10 years ago this past March. I joined the team the week of that anniversary.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

My favorite item in my jewelry shop right now is this necklace:

I love old trade beads and fossils. I rarely list jewelry with either one of those in my shop because I keep them all for myself.

What is your favorite possession, and why do you cherish it?

My favorite possession is my mom's recipe box. The recipes are written by hand. It's amazing how many emotions and memories are held in those handwritten cards.

What do you collect?

I collect so many different things. Right off the top of my head: rusty bits, shells, fossils, rocks, feathers, driftwood, vintage beads, old mason jars, heirloom seeds, crocks, old tools, glass insulators. The list goes on.....

Where would you like to be and what do you hope to be doing ten years from now?

Ten years from now, I'll have my nail apron on because we'll be building yet another house. This one will be up on Monteagle Mountain. It's where we're planning to live when we retire. I think I'll be a full time gardener, in between trips to any and all beaches.

I was going to try to resist it and post something opposite to the view outside my window, but I couldn't muster enough strength. I hope you all don't mind too much. And I really hope the lethargy doesn't get you, too. It's not so good for productivity. Favourite Things

Hello, hello! For this Tuesday's post, we have the pleasure of hearing from Joe of ProsperosBookshelf. Listen as he tells you about his Favorite Thing (You'll enjoy this):

My favorite thing: An oak desk my father made in the American Arts & Crafts style! Well, not really a desk, rather a traditional library table with three drawers on each side.

By profession my father was an electrotyper, not a carpenter, but his father was a carpenter who fell to his death from the roof of a schoolhouse
he was building in 1893, when my father, an only child, was eight years old. Years later when Dad married, his bride’s father gave the couple four acres of land and the foundation of a house as a wedding gift. Showing his carpentry skills, Dad built the house I grew up in (which still stands, nicely kept, in Portland, Maine) with beautiful oak glass front china cabinets in the dining room, fireplace surround and a built-in drop-leaf desk in the den, and a barrister’s stacked bookcase in the living room. And he built several pieces of furniture, including this library table.

I first remember the library table being in the living room. This was before we had a sofa. Very early in the 1930s, after we acquired more modern living room furniture, Dad closed in the front porch, and the library table went out there. I distinctly remember its being there because once, in a youthful fit of pique, I tried to hide under it on top of the footrest. Quite unsuccessfully, I’m afraid.

A great many years and events later, when my mother was in the mood to get rid of a few things, I happened to be home in time to acquire this most prized possession. I was teaching at Indiana University then, and the library table became my desk in our home in the little town of Nashville.

Now in our home on Naskeag Point in Brooklin, Maine, for many years it has been Mollie’s desk. There on its sturdy oak top Mollie runs Rough Magic Creations and helps me manage Prospero’s Bookshelf, while occasionally easing back in her creaky swivel chair to create jewelry and ponder the universe. The library table-cum-desk is approaching its 100th year. May we all at that age be as strong and look as great as this old oak desk.

What fun it is to imagine you hiding under the table and Mollie kicking back as she creates her jewels! Thank you so much, Joe, for painting such a vivid mental picture of your father's handsome Arts & Crafts handiwork. Now, I only wish I could see the house you grew up in!

Member Interview

Who are you?  Shay and Carol of Peachy Designs

Please tell us a bit about yourselves.

Shay ~ My Mom and I live in Bakersfield, California. Peachy Designs just had a nice ring to it, so that is why we chose this store name. Peachy Designs is a co-op store run by my Mom and I. We make bookmarks, zipper pulls and fan pulls. We use a wire design in all of our pieces.

I own another store called Simply Doodles, which is a banner store. I make banners for your Etsy store and etc. I have been addicted to paint shop pro, which is a program that I use to create the banners, for a long time now. Creating banners and drawing with paint shop pro is a lot like making jewelry, but it's created on the computer instead. It's a great way to express yourself, just as much as creating jewelry is.

Carol ~ My name is Carol (although my grandfather never called me anything but Susie!!). Everyone else called me Carolin. But my name is Carol. I live on the West Coast in Bakersfield. Never lived anywhere else, so it's home. I'm married to a really wonderful man and have been for 2/3 of my life.

I started making jewelry as a child....well, if you can call taking the rhinestones out of my mom's jewelry ... "making." I would put all the beautiful stones in a little jar and take them out ever so often and look at them... touch them... She caught me one day....maybe that explains the lock......!

I really got into jewelry making over 25 years ago by taking some classes at the local Jr. College, and haven't stopped since.

I have my jewelry design shop on Etsy called DesigningIt. I also have a jewelry supply shop where I feature handmade copper findings and lots of beads. It's called DesigningItSupplies.

Then....there is the shop that I share with my sweet daughter Shay. We both do the designs and she does almost all of the computer work, promoting the store, etc.

How did you learn about Etsy Project Embrace?

Shay ~ I found out about Etsy Project Embrace from another member here on Etsy.

Carol ~ I found out about EPE from you Mollie. I saw a treasury that you made for the team. I knew that if you were involved, then I probably should be also. You are a wonderful promoter!! I am so happy to be involved because it is such a wonderful cause.

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?

Shay ~ Our favorite item in Peachy Designs is the Dinosaur fan/light pull.

Carol ~ I think my favorite item in my shop right now is the one that sells! When an item sells, then I have an excuse to make more!! Not that I really need an excuse, sometimes I HAVE to make something...there is something inside of me that won't let me rest until I do!! If I had to pick something, it would be made from copper, have some blue/green stones in it, and 5 people would want one just like it!!!

What is your favorite possession, and why do you cherish it?

Shay ~ The beautiful shadow box that you and Joe made me. :)

Carol ~ My favorite possession would be something of my Mom's. She died 3 1/2 years ago from a stroke. She was just a little saver of things. While going through her things I found a receipt and handwritten note from 1967 that listed the material she bought for my wedding dress. My grandmother made it, so there were all these little notes listing the amount of material and how much it costs. No wonder I can't throw anything away!!!

What do you collect?

Shay ~ I collect miniature boxes.

Carol ~ I have a collection of giraffes. I think I picked giraffes because they are tall, leggy, graceful and have beautiful spots on them.....all the things I'm not!!! Well, except for the spots, but I'm working on that....found some cream advertised on TV at 2 AM!! They guarantee it to work!

Where would you like to be and what do you hope to be doing ten years from now?

Shay ~ Happy and content with our lives.

Carol ~ So, what do I hope to be doing in 10 years? That's easy....breathing!!!

You can't tell me you're surprised to find yet another food-inspired post from me. Maybe it would help to know that I spent my early adult years working in a professional kitchen. There was a time I thought I might like to pursue a career in the art of pastry as an outlet for creativity, but for a variety of reasons, decided another path should be taken instead. Leaving was definitely the right decision, but the kitchen's influence remains. I guess you can take the girl out of the kitchen, but you just can't take the kitchen out of the girl.

If you've got some fruit-inspired items in your shop, I'd love to see them. Feel free to leave a link in the comments section as I'm sure I'm not the only one who could use some more eye-candy!

Here's hoping you're finding inspiration along whichever path you're traveling today! --Katie :D

Favourite Things

Happy Tuesday, everyone! It seems my wrangling skills need a bit more work. In the meantime, I have a refreshing treat courtesy of my Philippines-born, California-bred husband to make up for my failings. When he was a kid living in San Diego, his mom would take ripened avocados from a tree in their backyard, mash them up with milk and sugar and serve it as a cool drink. Chris's version involves less chunks, but requires a trip to the grocery store.

Avocado Drink
(serves 2)

1 ripe avocado
3 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar

Combine all three ingredients. Blend in blender till smooth. Pour over ice. (The colder it is, the better it tastes.)

That's it! Consistency will be that of a milk shake. The taste? SO. RIDICULOUSLY. GOOD. And may I suggest...

...serving it out of opendoorstudio's Glass Decanter...

...into 5gardenias' Tall Tumblers...

...whilst wearing 3squares' Avocado Earrings?

Do you have a favorite way of preparing avocados? Please share!

And, while I do have some takers for the coming weeks, I don't yet have anyone lined up to share their Favourite Thing for next week's post. Don't be shy!

Hope your day isn't the pits! --Katie :D
